How Often Should You Have an Eye Test?

A clear guide to how frequently you should book an eye test based on your age, health, and risk factors, following UK College of Optometrists recommendations.

The College of Optometrists recommends that most adults have a routine eye test at least every two years. However, this is a general guideline, and many people need more frequent testing. If you are over 70, have diabetes, glaucoma, or a family history of eye disease, annual eye tests are strongly recommended. Children should have their first eye test before starting school and then annually throughout their school years, as undetected vision problems can significantly affect learning and development.

Certain groups are entitled to more frequent free NHS eye tests. If you are aged 40 or over with a first-degree relative (parent, sibling, or child) diagnosed with glaucoma, you qualify for a free annual NHS sight test. People with diabetes should attend both their annual NHS Diabetic Eye Screening and a separate routine eye test with their optometrist. Those taking medications that can affect the eyes — such as hydroxychloroquine, corticosteroids, or certain psychiatric medications — may also need more frequent monitoring.

Even if your vision seems fine, regular eye tests are important because many serious eye conditions, including glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy, develop gradually without any symptoms you would notice. An eye test is not just about checking whether you need glasses — it is a comprehensive health check that can detect signs of high blood pressure, diabetes, raised cholesterol, and even brain tumours. Your optometrist examines the blood vessels and nerves at the back of your eye, which are the only place in the body where these structures can be observed directly and non-invasively.

Do not wait for a problem before booking. If you are unsure when your last eye test was, or if it was more than two years ago, book one now. Many high-street opticians offer online booking and free eye tests as part of promotional offers, so cost and convenience should not be barriers. If you notice any sudden changes in your vision — such as flashes, floaters, blurred patches, or pain — do not wait for your next routine appointment. Contact your optician for an urgent assessment the same day.

Your optometrist will advise you on the ideal interval between your appointments based on your individual circumstances. Following their recommendation is one of the simplest and most effective things you can do to protect your long-term sight and overall health.
